As an online retail store, Amazon has learned to manage inventory.
Amazon.com has scheduled a product launch date for next week, September 6, which many think will be used to launch a replacement for the $199 Kindle Fire 7-inch tablet. This week Amazon said it has sold out of Kindle Fires.
Another takeaway is that a new and improved Kindle Fire will put more pressure on Apple to launch a low-cost 7-inch tablet. Amazon says the existing and now sold-out Kindle Fire accounts for 22% of the US tablet market. However, it will not provide its actual sales numbers.
Google’s $199 Nexus 7, made by Asus, and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 7 are the other main competitors in the 7-inch tablet market.
Amazon’s Web site refers purchasers to third-party sellers who have used models for as low as $165, compared with $199 for new models.
Amazon chief Jeff Bezos said in a statement, “We’re grateful to the millions of customers who have made Kindle Fire the most successful product launch in the history of Amazon,” adding that Amazon has an “exciting roadmap ahead.”
The Kindle Fire was launched nearly a year ago, late September 2011.
