Samsung Joins Windows 8 Parade: Pro & RT

– An RT Tablet & First Windows 8 Smartphone

Samsung this week announced an ATIV brand for Windows 8 devices and four Windows 8 products: two Windows 8 Pro PC that convert to tablets, a Windows 8-powered smartphone and a Windows 8 RT tablet.

The two PCs – the ATIV Smart PC Series 5 and Smart PC Pro Series 7 – are very different from each other even though they look nearly identical. Both have an 11.6-inch display, full-size keyboard and trackpad.

– The Series 5 uses Intel’s lower cost and lower power usage Atom processor. It has 1366×768 resolution.

– The Series 7 has the latest Intel i5 processor and a full HD resolution of 1920×1080.

Both displays are touch-capable. Storage is up to 256GB on a solid state drive (SSD). Both have an S pen like the Galaxy Note and front and rear cameras.

Users can detach the keyboards from both, which converts them into a touchscreen tablet.

They’re pricey, as might be expected from Intel-based, Windows pro devices. Samsung said the least expensive is $799 and the most expensive is $1199. It said mobile data options will be available on some models.

Samsung also announced Windows RT-powered tablet called.

Samsung said it will unify all the ATIV products with a line of apps and feature AllShare Play, which makes it easy for media sharing between ATIV devices and to connect to Samsung’s various cloud-based Web services.

First Windows 8 Smartphone Nokia might think it has first dibs on Windows for smartphones but Samsung is the first to announce a Windows 8 smartphone.

The ATIV S smartphone has a 4.8-inch screen, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and is one-third of an inch thick. It has NFC and Bluetooth, 1GB of onboard RAM an 8 MP rear-facing and 1.9 MP front- facing camera. It also has 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage and an SD card.
