Global Tablet Market to Hit 137m Shipments in 2012

Global tablet shipments will hit 137 million by the end of
2012, according to Futuresource Consulting’s “Tablet Market
Update” report.

Tablet shipments surpassed 32 million in Q3 2012, a 75%
increase in shipments year over year. The report pointed to
the launch of the iPad 4 and iPad mini, decreasing prices,
expanding Android options, and a surge in second screen and TV
Everywhere applications, as fueling the growth. Futuresource
predicts tablet shipments will hit 352 million by 2016.

The US accounts for 43% of global tablet ownership, and is on
track to reach 90 million tablet installed base by the end of
the year. In the UK, 45 million tablets will be in homes by
the end of 2012, with 6.4 million units sold in 2012, near
double the amount sold last year. The report said growth in
countries such as Brazil, Russia and India are at rates more

“We’re seeing significant industry growth across all key world
territories, with the majority of tablet market activity still
originating from consumer purchases,” said Simon Bryant, head
of consumer electronics, Futuresource Consulting.
