IDC Bumps Up Global Tablet Predictions
-Says Competitors Gaining Ground on iPad

IDC has revised its own global tablet market predictions in
its latest “Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker.” IDC pointed
to, once again, the launch of the iPad 4 and iPad mini and
surging Android shipments. Now, the firm expects 122.3 million
units shipped by the end of the year, up from the 117 million
units predicted earlier this year. IDC has also revised its
2013 prediction to 172.4 million units shipped, up from 165.9
million, and its 2016 prediction has been bumped up to 282.7
million units shipped.

Android, Amazon and Windows
IDC also revised it market share analysis. Android’s share of
the tablet market was increased to 42.7% for the full year of
2012, while Apple’s share was decreased from 56.3% to 53.8%.
“Android tablets are gaining traction in the market thanks to
solid products from Google, Amazon, Samsung, and others,” said
Tom Mainelli, research director of tablets at IDC.

IDC pegs Windows-based tablets will reach 2.9% in 2012, and is
on track to reach 10% by 2016.
