Variety Hosts 1st Entertainment Apps Awards

Variety held its first annual Entertainment Apps Conference
and Awards in Los Angeles, California. The conference brought
together digital distributors, app developers, studio and
network marketing execs, content creators, platform developers
and STB makers to discuss a range of topics regarding social
viewing, monetizing entertainment apps, smart TVs and
connected TV platforms.

Winners of the award ceremony included HBO Go, Walking Dead
Story Sync app by AMC, MobiTV, Fandango mobile app and Bottle
Rocket Apps, among others.

John Penney, EVP of strategy for Starz, described the app
space as ‘confusion’ and mayhem’ and said entertainment apps
are ‘confounding to the consumer,’ according to Home Media
Magazine. Penney was speaking on a panel with other
entertainment execs at the Variety Entertainment Apps
