IHS: Home Entertainment Sales Up
-First Time in 5 Years

IHS’s Screen Digest projections show home entertainment sales
are going to be up by the end of 2012 for the first time in
five years. IHS predicts 5% growth to reach $18.7 billion in
sales – the highest it’s been since 2009. Digital media
purchases are projected to increase to $975 million, up 40%
from the $679 million last year. Digital rentals will reach
$422 million, up from $283 million last year, and
subscription-based VoD will increase to $2.4 billion.

Physical media will still decline. IHS projects physical
purchases will drop to $8.2 billion in 2012, down $500
million. Physical rentals will also drop $500 million to reach
$5.2 billion.
