Sales of 4K Sets Are 3x More than 1080p HD Sets Were after 3 Years

The 4K naysayers have entirely disappeared as we predicted they would two years ago. 4K is not “inevitable” as we predicted two years ago – it is here now and 4K TV sets are being purchased by the millions – 4.5 million in the current quarter just in the States.

In the US alone, about 4.5 million units will be shipped just in Q4 2016, which will bring 2016’s total to 10 million, a 40% increase over 2015, according to the CTA (Consumer Technology Association). It said sales of 4K/UHD sets should reach an all-time high and about 56% of all TVs sold during Q4 will be 4K/UHD sets.

CTA cited as reasons for the boom in sales of 4K/UHD the increase in sizes of TVs that are 4K/UHD and the number of brands that offer them. Another reason, it said, is that new TV technologies such as HDR and wide color gamut are more widely available.
