The drive toward wirelessly connecting HD devices in the home continues.

ST-Ericsson

announced a line of 1080p HDMI-compatible transmitters on a single chip — the AV7100 and the AV8100. They go in mobile devices such as handsets, gaming consoles and digital cameras and enable them to stream HD video to TV sets.

The chips support 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi.

"Today, mobile computing is rapidly moving into the high-definition world, enabling superb 3D, HD, video and imaging on your mobile device," said Patrick Duréault, head of the analog and mixed signal unit at ST-Ericsson. He said his company is "driving innovation in high-definition mobility by integrating key entertainment technologies."

He said the chips will "further enhance the role of mobile devices as entertainment hubs."

ST-Ericsson said the broadcasters have shifted to offer HD programming, while consumers are demanding consistent viewing experiences — anytime, anywhere and on any device.

In a different segment of the wireless market, two weeks ago Gefen announced its GefenTV Wireless for HDMI 60Ghz extender for wireless connecting set-top boxes to a TV set. A pair cost $999. It’s the fourth product from Gefen offering wireless video connectivity.

It uses WirelessHD chips from SiBeam that enable HDMI extension with full HD resolution at 1080p and multi-channel audio. The range is about 30 feet (10 meters).
