The global mobile phone market grew 11.3% in the fourth quarter of 2009, ending five consecutive quarters of pitfalls, according to a study by IDC.
The study found that vendors shipped 325.3 million units in the quarter, up from the previous 292.4 million. The total for 2009 reached 1.13 billion units shipped, an overall decline from 2008’s 1.19 billion.

came in on top with 126.9 million shipments in the quarter, a 39% market share. Samsung was number two with 68.8 million units shipped and 21.2% of the market. LG came in third with 33.9 million units and 10.4% of the market. posted its twelfth consecutive quarter of year-over-year shipment declines, but last quarter was its lowest year-over-year decline since the first half of 2008. Motorola shipped 12 million units and held 3.7% of the market, finishing fifth.
IDC anticipates that the global phone market will rebound in 2010 due to economic recovery and some pent-up demand. New models and vendors embracing new smartphone technology will also help the market grow this year. |
