Mobile phone equipment maker NEC has said NTT DoCoMo will demonstrate a prototype LTE handset this month at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain.

NEC said that prototype will show the "transmission of high-resolution video through its ‘LTE-PF’ equipped communications platform and showcases the advantage of high-speed LTE communications." It will "exhibit high-speed streaming of high-definition video and a mobile thin client."

NEC is an NTT DoCoMo LTE development partnering with Fujitsu and Panasonic. The four are developing a chip called the LTE-PF chipset.

The handset’s manufacturer was not announced, although it could be NEC.

It could be the first LTE handset that’s shown publicly. Most announced LTE devices have been LTE modems for PCs.

NTT DoCoMo has said it’ll begin deploying LTE this year, as have Verizon Wireless, TeliaSonera and possibly US cable TV operator Cox.
