Video Takes Over the Internet. Or the Internet Takes Over

To say that video on the Internet exploded in 2006 is a vast understatement. It was a shock wave preparing us for the major seismic activity that's already occurring in 2007.

All the major TV networks, from the BBC to NBC and beyond, are now offering some of their shows online, either as ad-supported streams, for-pay downloads or, in some cases, both.

Amazon and AOL joined Apple, CinemaNow, Movielink and Starz with selling movie and television show downloads.

In what is perhaps the biggest online initiative, Britain's ITV announced plans to stream all of its TV channels live over the Internet.

Google famously shelled out $1.65 billion for video-sharing site YouTube warts, threats of lawsuits and all.

Microsoft turned the Xbox 360 videogame console into a networked entertainment device with the introduction of the Xbox Live Video Marketplace which has more than 1,000 hours of downloadable movies and TV episodes from the likes of Warner Bros, MTV and Paramount pictures available in both standard- and high-definition formats.

While sites like YouTube and AddictingClips fill our need for a quick fix or a laugh, other sites like Blip.TV, Metacafe and the new AOL Video site provide longer-length programming with higher production value to keep us occupied when even those hundreds of digital cable or satellite TV channels don't provide anything we want to watch.

We have identified over 300 sites that currently offer video in "Video Vision: A Survey of Video Web Sites: 2007." The list certainly isn't complete. There are more popping up weekly. Most of the sites included are in English, which no doubt leaves many that are in other languages.

The report focuses only on video that can be found on the Net, whether free, pay-per-view or by monthly or annual subscription.

CNN.com specializes in online news and information delivery. Its live streaming videos are updated continuously throughout the day. The Video page offers a few choices in a number of categories such as US, world, politics, law, business and sports.

However, a much larger selection can be found by choosing one of the major categories from the home page, then using the “Browse/Search” option in the “Watch Free Video” box. This brings up a list of all the clips on that subject, dating back about one week. An interesting feature is the bar graph showing how popular each clip is. Windows Media Player is required.

CNN emphasizes the “free” in “Watch Free Video” because the site eliminated its $4.95 monthly fee, switching to an ad-supported model. It also offers a for-pay premium service called CNN Pipeline, which features a main window and four channels of live video, streamed to viewers via a downloaded video player. Each Pipeline channel is a “live” Webcast. Over 2,000 hours of broadcasts (over 50,000 videos) from the CNN archives are available on-demand without ads. The archive can be searched by topic, date or Most Watched.

The fee for this service is $2.95 per month or $24.95 annually. A one-day pass is 99 cents.

CNNtoGo offers news, video, alerts and radio through partners AT&T (formerly Cingular), Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and Onstar.
